Toowoomba's home of martial arts
A gym built on community, growth and a genuine love of martial arts. Meet the people behind Behan Jiu Jitsu.
Why Behan Jiu Jitsu
"Every day I walk onto the mats I get to challenge myself. To commit to something and make it work. To realise my weaknesses and my strengths, and work on them regularly. To ensure that those around me get to test themselves physically and mentally in an environment that encourages growth and supports trial and error. When people step on my mats, we all unite and align to the same path. We are all on the path to better ourselves."
Justin Behan Head Coach and Founder · Behan Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Head BJJ Coach and Owner
Justin has over 17 years of experience on the mats in Toowoomba. He started his journey in 2008 and received his black belt in 2020 after twelve years of continuous dedication to the art. As the founder of Behan Jiu Jitsu, Justin has built a gym centred on community, growth and a genuine love of the sport.
His coaching philosophy is simple: show up, put in the work, and trust the process. He has guided students from their very first class all the way to competition podiums.
"My goal is to see everyone better themselves each day they step on those mats. Jiu Jitsu helps equip you to lead a better life, to take hold of situations that were previously uncomfortable. It transforms lives through constant pressure, failure and success."
BJJ Coach
Curtis is a Brown Belt under head coach Justin Behan and has been training for ten years. He and Justin have been training side by side since the very beginning of his journey, building both skill and experience together over the past decade.
As a coach teaching adults and kids at Behan HQ, Curtis brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to every class. While skilled across all areas of Jiu Jitsu, he has a particular love for No Gi BJJ where his sharp sense of movement, control and submissions really shines. Curtis is dedicated to helping students develop their technique, grow in confidence, and enjoy every step of their journey on the mats.
Head Kids BJJ Coach
Christy started training BJJ in 2003 and spent the next eight years dedicating herself to training and competing nationally and overseas, including European Championships and two World Championships. She also spent time training in the UK and Sweden, sharpening her skills at the highest levels of the sport.
She took a break in 2011 to start a family and found BJJ again when her kids were old enough to train alongside her. Christy now brings that wealth of experience and competitive history to the kids program at Behan HQ, where she is one of the most passionate and dedicated coaches on the team.
Assistant BJJ Coach
Zev is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt and movement-focused coach with a lifelong dedication to physical transformation and disciplined training. Having trained across strength sports, functional fitness and now Jiu Jitsu, Zev brings over two decades of lived experience to the mats, including two major personal weight loss journeys totalling over 100kg.
His coaching style draws from constraint-led learning and ecological principles, encouraging students to problem-solve under pressure rather than rely on rigid repetition.
Kids and Teens BJJ Coach
Keegan started his Jiu Jitsu journey in 2018 and is a dedicated Brown Belt under Head Coach Justin Behan. He is one of the key coaches at Behan HQ and has a real passion for guiding teens and kids, helping them unlock their full potential on and off the mats.
Keegan's coaching style balances structure, discipline and fun, making him a genuine role model for the next generation of martial artists coming through the gym.
